English Language Learning Resources on Rhode IslandIn 2023, there were slightly more than 17,000 English language learners in Rhode Island's schools. Spanish, Portuguese-based creoles and pidgins, Portuguese, Chinese, and Arabic, have been the top five languages spoken by ELLs in Rhode Island in recent years. (National Centre for Education Statistics) Rhode Island joined WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment) in 2003. WIDA is a consortium of states devoted to the creation and execution of high standards and fair educational opportunities for English language learners. WIDA provides forms with programs for identifying and measuring the English language progress of their English learners on an annual basis.
